MoneyMonk or booxx?

MoneyMonk is built for the freelancer who sells hours: time tracking and project administration sit at its core, not on the side. The difference is what your price depends on, and which language you can keep your books in.

Short answer

MoneyMonk is a Dutch bookkeeping package for freelancers built around time tracking and project administration, with plans from €0 (Starter, free for 15 months) to €37.50 a month and a 30-day free trial. What makes it unusual is that your plan moves with your turnover: the three cheaper plans (Starter, Basis and Pro) limit both the number of bank transactions a month (20 to 50) and your annual turnover (€20,000 to €100,000); the most expensive plan, Ultra (€37.50), has unlimited bank transactions and is meant for a turnover from €100,000. Grow past one of those limits and you move up a plan. The booxx package costs €19 a month with no cap at all and works in five languages — Dutch, English, Polish, Hungarian and Romanian — right down to the ledger accounts. If you sell hours and read Dutch comfortably, MoneyMonk is the better choice; if you do not read Dutch, you cannot run the core of your administration there yourself. You bring your existing books along here as an audit file (XAF), ledger and open items included.

booxx

The package booxx has two plans: Standard (€19 a month, everything included, with VAT returns and automatic bank reconciliation) and Dormant (€4 a month, read-only for a set of books that is temporarily dormant). You start with a 90-day trial of the full product, with no payment method up front; nothing is charged during that period, so there is nothing to cancel. All amounts are per set of books per month, excluding VAT, and cancellable monthly. There are no setup fees. Standard has no limits at all: unlimited invoices, entries and bank transactions, and unlimited users — colleagues and your accountant work alongside you at no extra cost.

Questions about switching

Can I bring my bookkeeping with me if I switch?

Yes. Every Dutch accounting package can produce an audit file (XAF) — that's a legal requirement. You import it here, including your chart of accounts, your entries and your open items.

Can I switch halfway through the year?

Yes. You pick a start date, import your audit file or your opening balance, and post here from that point on. The periods you've already filed with your previous package stay there.

Will my bookkeeper work with this?

They can see your books if you let them in, and they get the audit file in the format they're used to. If they'd rather work in their own package, that audit file is exactly what they need.

Why do you name your competitors?

Because you're going to compare anyway, and because we aren't better on every point. Above, per package, you'll find when you're better off there. That's fairer, and it saves you a month of trying things out.
